It is our pleasure to invite you to a benefit for the Indian Law Resource Center. We are honored to welcome to Portland SUE MASTEN, Yurok Nation Tribal Leader, who will be joining us to talk about her work with the Center and to share the incredible story of the Yurok Nation's struggle to save their ancestral ways and fishing rights.
The Indian Law Resource Center has been in the vanguard of efforts to defend Indian rights since 1979. After 30 years of negotiations, the UN General Assembly just adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Tim Coulter, the Center's founder and executive director, worked tirelessly to secure its adoption.
The hard work continues with work in New York State, where the Center represents the Onandaga Nation in their efforts to force the clean up of Lake Onandaga, their traditional homeland and in Guatemala, where a Canadian mining company is threatening the lives of Maya Q'eqchi villagers in an effort to gain access to the rich nickel deposits that lie below.
We invite you down to the Gallery to learn more about this organization, meet some extraordinary people, eat delicious tapas from La Bonita and view amazing artworks from the recently opened exhibition Geometrics: Linear Forms in Native American Art.
